OUR "MUST"
Ratafià Liquore d'Abruzzo
This month we are inviting you to discover Ratafià, Plaisir d’Abruzzo. It is a fruit ratafia measured at 20% alcohol. It is a harmonious blend Montepulciano d'Abruzzo D.O.C. wine and black cherries. It can be enjoyed chilled as an apéritif, mixed with sparkling wine, or used as an ingredient in a dessert. At its origins, ratafia (sometimes spelt ratafiat) signified any drink that was enjoyed during the ratification of an agreement or a treaty (the origin of the word most probably came from the latin expression rata fiat, “let the treaty be ratified” , “let the business be concluded”). Today the word is used to designate to distinct drinks: mistelles which are produced in certain regions of France (most notably Champagne and Burgundy) as well as fruit ratafias. These “ratafias” are mainly found in Mediterranean regions (Spain, France, Italy, etc.). There are ratafia recipes for nuts, bitter almonds, quinces, cherry pits and peach pits, oranges and various other types of fruits.
THE LAB’S COCKTAIL SUGGESTION
This month we are mixing up our “Grant’s Apple”, a perfumed short drink with a few salty touches. To be consumed with moderation!
Grant's Apple
- 6 slices of ginger
- 1¾ oz of Grant’s Whisky
- ¼ oz of Crème de cassis
- 1½ oz of Boiron Granny Smith apple purée
- 1 fan of apple slices
To make this cocktail, use a Boston shaker. Muddle the six slices of ginger and then add the Grant’s whisky, the crème de cassis and the Boiron Granny Smith apple puree. Cover with ice and vigorously shake for 8 to 10 seconds. Using a pulp strainer and a tea strainer (double strain), pour the mixture into a martini glass - preferably chilled. Decorate with a fan of apple slices and enjoy!!!

Grand Marnier & Navan Mixology Summit 2009
The house of Marnier-Lapostolle is presenting the “Grand Marnier & Navan Mixology Summit 2009”. This event will be bringing together 100 of the best mixologist/ bartenders for three days worth of seminars that will combine knowledge, expertise and discussion as well as special events related to cocktails. The conference will be taking place at the Vail Cascade Resort & Spa in Vail, Colorado from April 5th to April 7th, 2009.
Participants in the Grand Marnier contest, which begun across Canada on November 10th 2008 and wraps up at the beginning of March 2009, will have the chance to present their creations during a show that promises to be very interesting.
The rules are very simple. Each competitor must create, name and present two signature cocktails – one must be Grand Marnier based, while the other must feature Navan. Finalists will be selected according to a variety of criteria including the originality of the recipes, the percentage of sales achieved as well as the promotion of the products.
